Pyrography and scratchboard

I’ve been working on a little experiment combining pyrography with scratchboard for a stronger effect. The contrast between the black and white and the comparatively lighter wood coloring intrigued me.  I kind of like the way this worked out, so I might be doing a few more experiments.

I just glued the scratchboard drawing onto the wood panel with craft glue.  Next I’ll seal it with an acrylic or polyurethane varnish. That should keep the edges from pulling up. I’ve debated using color, and decided against it, even along the border, which was my original intent for this piece.

50/50 Pilsen

After all that preparing, the time is upon us.  I’m participating in 50/50 Pilsen this weekend.  This is a show that Mandy, Megan and Hesper have been planning for a while now.  I’m psyched, it seems to be coming together well.  I don’t have quite as many wood-burn products as I had hoped (and sorry, but I didn’t get pictures in time to post, I’ll post my display tomorrow, promise).  But that really doesn’t matter, I think this is still going to be an awesome show.  We’ve got some great artists and crafters here.  This weekend’s show is going to be primarily a craft show, and next weekend launches the art show.  Anyone local to Chicago, hope to see you there.

Clumsy-Illustration Friday

woodburn and painting on wood

Clumsy

In the beginning, there was no evil, but for a jar that Deity kept locked up in a cupboard, leftover from a previous experiment with another universe.  To keep His new project from being tainted, He called upon one of his angels to take the jar out of the studio, far far away.  Only his weakest and ugliest runt showed up.  Deity sighed, and gave him the jar.  “Take care with this, and remove it to a location far away.”

The crooked angel almost made it to the edge of the world, before the jar simply slipped from his hands and shattered on the ground, allowing evil to scatter to the ends of the earth and there flourish.  And so, Deity shrugged his shoulders and started on a new project.  The poor malformed angel was given the world to do with as he wished.

This is a WIP I started for Illustration Friday.  I’ve been wanting to pursue woodburning as an element in my work, hoping to find a balance between the woodburned elements, and those using paint or ink.  So far, seems way off balance.  I also used my new Dremel for the bird’s outline.  Weee fun.

Pyrography

I’m thinking of taking up pyrography, since I’ve been planning to start using wood as a support for my artwork. As my “Creatures of the Arboretarium” series shows, I’ve already begun to appreciate the unique background that wood provides to a drawing. The only obstacle I can think of is, the reproductions, should I decide to make any, won’t be as crisp and nice as they would be on paper. The natural grain that makes wood such a good medium also tends to muck up a print, at least in my opinion.

If I can find an inexpensive kit, I may try it soon. I’ve got an idea that I think would really work well with this medium and a bit of watercolor or thinned out acrylic. I think this is one of those mediums that has a bad image, because of all those “Bless this House” plaques. Maybe if I started doing some “Damn Your Eyes” plaques . . .

Goat-ape beast

Here’s a blend between goats and ape. Yet another hybrid from the arbortoreum.

Goat-Ape

Living in the deepest part of the Arbortoreum, the goat-ape is mild-mannered and omnivorous. They are especially fond of bone-marrow.
