“He would not respond, but only stood there, unmoving. In the dark, he didn’t even look substantial, just little more than tiny particles, dust motes floating together in his shape. Sylvia fancied that if she approached him, and reached out her hand to touch him, he would simply fly apart, and she’d be left with nothing but a dusty pile.”

–From “Inherit the Dust” by Dorian Grimwater.

A note on the above quote. Dorian Grimwater is a famous author of several puzzling (literally) books in his home country. Most of his books offer clues to the whereabouts of multiple stolen treasures. Needless to say, he is wanted by authorities, and his books are bestsellers if only because of the multiple attempts at uncovering the valuables. Dorian’s books come to us only in pieces, and entirely by a fluke, as his home country resides in an alternate universe.

Illustration Friday–Chicken

Watercolor illustration of a chicken and eggs.

For Illustration Friday 1/14, the topic was “chicken”. I did this in watercolor and ink, and then I scanned it and fixed as many of the more glaring mistakes as I could in Photoshop. I’m not big on actually composing an illustration digitally, mainly because I can’t afford the right tools and simply spend way too many hours staring at a screen to devote any further time than I have to. Still, it comes in handy for little things like thickening the lines bordering the egg whites and yolk.

Holy sloppy studio, Batman!

My drafting table, cluttered up.

All I wanted to do was work on a drawing for Illustration Friday.  But it seems my favorite workspace has been hit hard by the storm of the holidays, so I need to do a little reorganization and cleaning up.  I hate organizing, mostly because I’m terrible at just getting rid of stuff.  I kind of have to read some articles on cleaning up like this one at Lifehacker in order to get inspired enough to skip what I want to do and do what I have to do.

2011 Plans

Posted in Art with tags , , , , , on January 5, 2011 by scratchyb

I believe in starting each year with a set of plans and goals, not resolutions. Resolutions always make me think of someone resolving to do something radically different from what they’ve done before. It may be a matter of semantics, but focusing on plans and goals, especially if they are a continuation of previous tests seems more logical. It’s easier to use the momentum you have from last year’s accomplishments to make changes and improve your game. Which doesn’t mean you can’t try new things.

This year I plan to:

1. Participate in Illustration Friday more often. I started out last year doing this, and found it a terrific creativity boost.

2. Add some dynamic content to my website at http://oldscratchart.com. There was a little illustrated book I did eight years ago, and I thought it might be nice to have online as a slide show.

3. Begin a new body of artwork, in the direction I’ve been wanting to move for some time now.

4. Narrow my focus for projects.

That last one is the closest to a resolution, in that I am most likely to break it. I can focus for the short term, but let’s see just where I’m at in December.
